Washington, DC: Unatek was among the 20 companies invited to participate in a Job Creation Summit by the US Senate.
Dr. Iheagwara was speaking on Monday at the Laurel Municipal Center before a US Senate Committee hearing on "The Role of Small Businesses in Strengthening Cyber Security Efforts in the United States."
The Summit which took place at the Capitol Rotunda brainstormed increasing the tempo on job growth as the economy continues to recover. Several participants highlighted the lack of available skilled workers in certain industries as a militating factor towards job growth and expansion and encouraged the US Senate to enact legislations on worker training programs to close the skilled labor shortage gap.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Unatek's Director of Cyber Security Practice, Dr. Charles Iheagwara, a leading Cyber security expert and IT management executive has called on the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship to enact a legislation that mandates a certain percentage of all federal and state Cyber security contracts as set aside for small businesses.
Dr. Iheagwara was speaking on Monday at the Laurel Municipal Center before a US Senate Committee hearing on "The Role of Small Businesses in Strengthening Cyber Security Efforts in the United States."
Emphasizing the role small businesses play in protecting the US national infrastructures from Cyber attacks, Dr. Iheagwara said that as frontline problem solvers, small businesses provide the majority of new jobs and produce much of the creativity and innovation that fuels economic growth. The Largo-based executive added that while the government is emphasizing the role of small businesses in bolstering the nation's cyber security efforts, it should address the obstacles that prevent them from realizing their full potentials and increasing their contribution to the overall economic growth.
Dr. Iheagwara said companies such as Unatek will not be able to grow and step up to the plate to meet the Cyber security challenges facing the nation without funding, which is most easily obtained through government contracts. He said small businesses often lack the time and resources to compete with larger ones for cyber security contracts even though most of the innovation and creativity in the Cyber security sector has come from small businesses.
The talent pool that small businesses provide is "overwhelming," Iheagwara said, referring to Maryland companies that have set standards for the rest of the industry, including two in Columbia: Sourcefire, which created Snort to prevent and detect network intruders, and Tenable Security, which created its Nessus vulnerability scanner.
"Niche services is an area where small businesses have dominance," he said. "But it's good for us to recognize that growing new ideas takes money."
He encouraged the committee to consider mandating a certain percentage of all federal and state cybersecurity contracts be set aside for small businesses.

Largo, MD: Unatek Wins Homeland Security of the Year Award. The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, the Maryland Technology Development Corp., RSM McGladrey Inc. and Saul Ewing LLP have announced the winners of the 11th annual Maryland Incubator Company of the Year Awards.
The ceremony was held Thursday at the Center Club. The awards, chosen by a selection committee comprising venture capitalists, and government and business leaders, recognized the achievements of eight companies in Maryland's incubators.
The winning companies were selected based on the organization's goals and success in achieving its objectives. Judges considered factors such as technology and product development; intellectual property; increase in employee numbers; growth in revenue or earnings; engagement of significant customers and strategic partners; receipt of awards or grants; attraction of outside investors; innovation; self-sufficiency; impact on the region and usage of the incubator's services.
